Self Protection Seminar

Friends, The BKA was pleased to host a self-protection seminar on February 28 for interested members of the community. Material from the seminar is hosted in our "Links" page. Here is a great testimonial from one of our clients: "Wow, it was no sissy course! I have come away from it with an aching right arm, a swollen and bruised knuckle, along with a bruised leg. BUT more than that, I personally have come away with it with the awareness of how easily a man could take me down, how difficult it would be to defend myself against an attacker. Thank you for the tools you provided for our ladies to avoid situations that could cause a potential incident, as well as for the encouragement and confidence you have given each of us to fight back. The two hours was so worth our time, and ultimately could be life changing"

Congratulations Sensei Scott!

The BKA had five members in attendance at the South Calgary Wado-kai karate tournament. Overall, there were 211 kyu belts and 48 black-belts, including Sensei Denis Labbe (8th-Dan), and Sensei Ron Mattie (7th Dan), the President and Chief Instructor for the SWKKF respectively. The National Team was also present, and features our very own Sensei Kelsey Ross (2nd-Dan). Congratulations to Sensei Scott Knowles, who place 1st in Kumite and 3rd in kata in a very competitive Shodan division. Sensei Kelsey placed 3rd in kata in the Nidan-Sandan division, and 4th in Women's black-belt kumite. The team competition was exciting. It was judged to WKF rules, and was easily won by the National Team. We had an awesome banquet afterwards, but got snowed in the massive storm that hit Calgary that night. Overall, a very memorable week-end. Sensei Heather and Darren Fidyk and the entire south Calgary wado-kai club did an excellent job of hosting another great event.

Iaido Demonstration

On January 6, the BKA was pleased to have Sensei Dave Rathnow, a Godan in Iaido (the Japanes art of drawing the sword), perform a demonstration of Iaido katas with his katana (long sword). The posture, precision, and realism he brought to his kata practice made it easy to se the parallels between Iaido kata and karate kata. The BKA appreciates Sensei's visit and the insights he provided to the lineage and history of Iaido.

New Training Equipment!

The BKA is pleased to have received four Bob XL striking "bags" on water-filled bases to supplement its growing list of equipment used to support top quality training for our members. In addition to a full complement of professional strength training equipment to support our base fitness program, we have striking shields, focus mitts, grappling puzzle mats and now Bobs to take our training training to the next level. The Bobs make their debut in class on January 9.
