Tuesday Adult Class Times

As a result of incredible registration in our youth program, we have had to add a second youth class on Tuesdays.  As a result, adult training will not begin until 7:30 now on Tuesday. We know 9:00 pm is a hard deadline for a number of you, and so we will push strength training to an optional time on Tuesdays of 9:00 - 9:30 pm.

On behalf of the Youth program, I want to thank all Adult members for their consideration. We should have a resolution to the situation by January, and will seek to return to our regular times then.

Tuesday Youth Class Times Adjusted

As announced in class last Tuesday, we are overwhelmed and humbled by the turn-out we have received to our Tuesday time.  Last week, we set a record for having 48 kids on the floor. This, however, creates a problem, as the space and amount of equipment available is not sized to have this many students present at the same time.

As such, we are splitting the Tuesday time into two separate timeslots:
5:30 – 6:30 pm (White - White Stripe)
6:30 – 7:30 pm (Yellow and Up)

These times are effective September 24.

While the times suggests that the first time in for white and white stripe, this is not strictly the case, and both timeslots are open to any ranks.  As the beginner group includes younger kids, we do expect they will favour the earlier timeslot.  However, we are giving parents an option to choose the time slot that works best for them, and hoping that we get a roughly even split.  We’ll see how things work out this Tuesday.

I should point out too that your child’s registration in the BKA entitles them to train twice a week if you choose.  This means you can also attend the Saturday class, or, if you want to attend only once per week, but miss a Tuesday, there is no problem dropping in on Saturdays.

We appreciate your flexibility in adapting to our positive situation this Fall.  This will allow us to ensure the highest quality of instruction for your kids.

    Jion

Sensei Scott has spent time studying the kata Jion, and we'll make that our summer 2013 new kata. We'll learn the kata this week, and also continue our clinch striking drills.

On Youtube, you can find a few Wado versions, and it is also worthwhile to study Shotokan and Shitoryu versions too, for the subtle differences between the movements, stance, and focus points. Here is a good version to study:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=fvwp&v=N2PcEm9eXBw&NR=1

The origin of the kata is debated, but may link to a the Jion-ji temple. Here is the Wikipedia citation:

    New Term

Happy New Year! I hope you are enjoying the last free days of holidays prior to a return to school and your regular activities. Karate resumes this Tuesday, January 8 at 5:45 pm at Grandview Heights for all ranks, and Saturday, January 12 for split training times. Remember that if you were newly promoted to Orange, you can now come to the 10:30 am class on Saturday morning!

    New This Term
Regardless of rank, older students may also come on Saturdays at 10:30 am. If you are twelve or older, with some lee-way depending on size, you can come to the Saturday 10:30 training time. If you have any questions, or need clarification, please contact me to discuss. What we are trying to do is create a teen class on Saturday mornings at 10:30. Parents who are yellow-belt or higher may continue to come at 9:00 am if that’s when your kids train, but may also come at 10:30 am too to follow your kids as it were. Also, students who are yellow-belt or higher should all have hand pads, as we tend to do more sparring with partners in the winter term. Talk to Sensei Freeman to get pads.

    Did you know?
The club has a Facebook site, and, of course, you can always follow us here at our web-site (www.edmonton-karate.com).

    Bring a Friend
Our club has grown over the years because members like you have shared your experiences with others. Staying with karate is made a lot easier if students have friends with whom they can share the experience. Why not let them know about what we do, and encourage them to come out and give it a try?

    See you next week!
